On July 24 local time, 25 global tech companies including Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, IBM, Dell and Hugging Face jointly released an open letter titled Open Weights and American AI Leadership, urging U.S. policymakers to avoid premature, sweeping regulatory restrictions on open-weight AI models. The signatories state that open-source and open-weight models are core drivers of AI innovation, promoting technology accessibility, lowering adoption barriers, strengthening supply chain security, and mobilizing global developers to identify security vulnerabilities together. Premature restrictions would stifle market competition, drive innovation overseas, and ultimately erode U.S. leadership in AI technology. The letter acknowledges potential misuse risks of open models but argues they should be addressed through ongoing security R&D, tiered regulation and industry standards rather than blanket bans. The signatory list has since expanded to over 50 organizations, making it the most prominent industry voice on AI regulation recently. Keywords: #OpenSourceAI #AIRegulation #TechGiants #OpenWeightModels
