On July 20, Microsoft officially announced it will deploy AMD's first rack-scale AI system, Helios, on Azure, becoming one of its first core customers. Helios integrates 72 Instinct MI455X GPUs and 31TB of HBM4 memory, delivering 1.4 exaFLOPS of peak FP8 compute — the first integrated system in five years to pose genuine competition to NVIDIA in high-end AI compute clusters. Microsoft will launch ND MI455X v7 instances targeting production-grade AI inference, search and agent workloads, with volume shipments scheduled for the second half of 2026. Observers say the AI compute market is shifting from NVIDIA dominance toward a multi-vendor competitive landscape.
