South Korea Launches Trillion-Dollar AI Chip Initiative Led by Samsung and SK
On June 29, the South Korean government officially announced its "Three Mega Projects" industrial plan. Partnering with Samsung Electronics and SK Group, total investment will reach up to 2,000 trillion won ($1.3 trillion) over the next decade, focusing on semiconductor manufacturing, AI computing data centers, and physical AI. With 800 trillion won dedicated to semiconductor fabs, Samsung and SK Hynix will each build two advanced wafer fabs to expand memory and AI chip capacity. This national strategic response to global AI competition sets a record for industrial investment scale in South Korea.
