Musk Explains xAI Shutdown: Merged into SpaceX, Renamed SpaceXAI, Focused on Space Compute
On May 6, Musk officially explained xAI’s shutdown on X: xAI will no longer exist as an independent company; it will be merged into SpaceX and renamed SpaceXAI, positioned as SpaceX’s AI product line. He stated the goal is centralized management of rockets, satellites, AI compute, and data platforms, placing AI regulatory risks under SpaceX’s governance. SpaceX acquired xAI in February at a combined valuation of $1.25T; all xAI founders have left. On the same day, SpaceXAI partnered with Anthropic to provide Colossus 1 supercomputer (220k+ NVIDIA GPUs) and jointly develop orbital AI compute.
